Adamawa Speaker, Aminu Iya Abbas’s Senatorial ticket on shaky grounds

A disgruntled candidate for the position of senator in the recently ended Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) primary election, Mohammed Murtala Modibbo, has taken the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, to court.
Former candidate for the Adamawa Central Senatorial Zone Mohammed has asked the Federal High Court in Yola to declare the May 23, 2022 election of Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas is null and void.
The disgraced candidate demanded that the election be annulled on the grounds that it was marred by numerous irregularities and malpractices and that the Speaker should not have been declared the winner.
According to his request for an order, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has been named as a party in the lawsuit, its privies, agents, representatives, or anyone else operating on its behalf, was also prohibited from recognising or endorsing the Speaker as the PDP candidate.
In addition, he pleaded with the court to prevent the Speaker from running as the PDP’s candidate in the upcoming general election for the seat of Adamawa Central Senatorial Zone.
Mohammed further requested a permanent injunction barring the Speaker from taking part in any future elections held by the PDP to select its candidates for the upcoming general election through the counsel of D. S. Adebola.
However, the Speaker claimed that the primary was free and fair as a consequence of which all the candidates who participated in the election voluntarily signed the results of the exercise in his counter affidavit to the original summons through his counsel, T. H. Shabo.
Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas said that the process was right and that there were no mistakes. He also said that it wasn’t true that the list of delegates was changed, let alone in his favour, even though he knew that was against the law.
He asserted that none of the delegates who participated in the election was employees of the government, arguing that the plaintiff’s claim that political appointees of the government rigged an election that INEC oversaw and validated was untrue.
He denied that he gave fake or forged documents to the PDP Screening Committee. He said that he had never paid delegates, let alone large amounts of money, to get their votes.
He asked the court to dismiss the case completely and imposed an N10 million fine as a vexatious penalty.
