AIMS, the African Institute for Mathematical Science, has started the African Master’s Degree in Machine Intelligence, a one-year intensive graduate program that is fully funded.

This program will give bright young Africans the most up-to-date training in machine learning and how to use it at campuses in Rwanda and Ghana. All students who are accepted into the AMMI program get a full scholarship. Applications must be sent in by August 31, 2022. Here is where you can find out more.

If we diversify the people who work on algorithm discoveries and the locations where they are based, the machine learning revolution presents a rare opportunity to enhance lives without widening and escalating global disparities. Currently, North America, Europe, and Asia are home to the vast majority of experts. Africa is seldom mentioned at all. Such a lack of diversity may have the following three regrettable effects:

  • Lacking educational resources, research communities miss out on talented innovators.
  • Unintentional algorithmic biases persist and exacerbate discrimination.
  • There are fewer opportunities to apply ML to better the lives of all Africans.

A Pan-African network of centers of excellence for post-graduate education, research, and public engagement in mathematical sciences is the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS). In order to empower Africa’s most talented students to innovate and advance the continent’s economic, educational, and scientific independence, they are creating a novel master’s degree program.
