Vrati Nzonzo, a stakeholder of the ruling APC in Adamawa State, has joined Senator Elisha Abbo and former Secretary to the Federal Government Babachir David Lawan in criticising the controversial ticket.
According to Vrati, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s choice of a fellow Muslim as his running mate may have serious repercussions for the party among Christians in northern Nigeria.
In an interview with the press, Vrati Nzonzo, party stakeholder in Adamawa State and one of the party’s House of Representatives candidates in the state was very much against Shettima being chosen as a fellow Muslim. He said that doing so would hurt the feelings of Nigerian Christians.
[quotation name=’Vrati’]Let me be as blunt as I can be. I’ll not hesitate to show my displeasure over the decision of my party, the APC, to make our presidential ticket a religious affair.
Making it a Muslim-Muslim affair has brought to the fore the issue of religion in our politics in Nigeria.
Through his scheming for the ticket, Tinubu has promised to pick a northern Muslim as his running mate. He openly said he needs to get a Muslim VP from the North to win.
So, ‘ab initio’, he did not paint the picture of competence as he would later want us to believe; he painted the picture of religion. The governor of Kano (Abdullahi Ganduje) was saying before it happened that Tinubu had promised to give them a Muslim VP from the North. Several other notable names have corroborated this.[/quotation]
Nzonzo questioned the idea behind the Muslim-Muslim ticket because, in his mind, it raises ethical questions about how Tinubu sees Islam.
[quotation name=’Vrati questioned’]Does it mean Tinubu is not Muslim enough?” Are we having two types of Muslims or what is the issue? [/quotation]
He insisted that the divisive ticket could endanger the party’s prospects in the North.
Why this issue has caused more damage than good is because for Tinubu it is all about winning an election, without recourse to whether it is right or not.
[quotation name=’Vrati bemoaned’]Now what becomes of people like me who are Christians and candidates on the APC platform?” Are we now saying Christian votes don’t matter? If they don’t, are you now telling them not to vote for me?
“Because I’m in the APC and my party has refused to recognise or to be fair to my faith and its people in Northern Nigeria.” And it’s not only me; a lot of other contesting Christian candidates of Christian stock will also be victims.[/quotation]
Nzonzo, on the other hand, asked voters across the country who were upset by the choice to vote for other APC candidates, saying that it wouldn’t be fair to punish them for Tinubu’s mistakes.
