Asuquomo and PSIV Form A Drill Track Team For “Roll Deep”

Nigeria appears to be the next hotbed to push the contentious music style—Drill—as it creeps into the American mainstream market and continues to inspire various artists across the world. If you’ve talked to any Nigerian artists who don’t compose Afrobeats, you’ll know they have a difficult time commercially promoting their music. Nonetheless, it’s encouraging to watch Nigerian new wave rappers unite and do their best to carry the sound on their shoulders.
Asuquomo, a Port Harcourt native who now resides in Ottawa, recently released the official music video for his first single ‘Roll Deep,’ which features 234 Drill musician PSIV—pronounced “PS 4.” The ominous track is taken from the rapper’s upcoming extended play, ‘INI MINI MO,’ which will be released on Friday, May 13. Both artists expressed their feelings about their collaboration:
I’m tryna tap in with the exciting energy on the West African Drill Scene, and PSIV knew exactly what that needed — Asuquomo
Roll Deep is a very unique record because of Asuquomo and I’s backgrounds. Back in Nigeria, Asuquomo grew up in PortHarcourt while I have lived most of my life in Lagos; both [are] very intense places with different energies. Combining that with his Canadian Hip-Hop roots and the sonic influence of Grime and UK Drill on my sound, we have delivered a standout Nigerian Drill record that captures the very best elements of the many worlds that we have been exposed to — PSIV
PSIV released his first project to the public in April of last year. ‘Welcome to The 234’ is the title. The five-track album addressed the local-turned-global clamor around the horrifying #EndSARS protests, as well as the rapper’s other experiences in Lagos.
Now you can watch the Nigerian rappers in action in the official music video for ‘Roll Deep.’ BROCKHAMPTON, Mdou Moctar, and Wizkid have all opened for Asquqomo. We’re excited to see what comes next.
