Aviation Workers Shuts Down Airport in Kaduna As They Begin Strike

Aviation unions have declared plans to shut down flight operations at the Kaduna State Airport till next week Friday in order to carry out industrial action.

In a statement released on Saturday, the National Union of Air Transport Employees, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, and National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers confirmed the news.

According to a joint statement signed by NUATE General Secretary Ocheme Aba, ANAP General Secretary Rasaq Saidu, and NAAPE General Secretary Umoh Ofonime, the development is the result of a collaborative accord made by the country’s main aviation unions.

According to the statement, the strike action is in response to the Nigeria Labour Congress, Kaduna State Chapter’s resolution to take action in protest of the Nasir El-Rufai-led administration’s anti-labor tactics targeting civil personnel.

The decision by aviation workers to strike may cause immeasurable agony and anguish to the traveling public, as the Kaduna Airport is currently the crucial connecting gateway for Northern businessmen and the elites who avoid riding the Abuja-Kaduna road, which has turned into a kidnapping hotspot.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Kaduna State Council earlier called on all workers in the state to disregard the state government’s circular against the five days warning strike which is expected to begin on Monday.
