Canoe Capsizes in Katsina, Killing 18 People, 6 Others Missing

After a boat sank in Katsina State’s Mai’adua Local Government Area, at least 18 bodies were found and six people were reported missing.
Lawal Sakatare, a local who corroborated the tragedy, stated 24 people were onboard the ill-fated canoe when it capsized, with 18 people drowning, the most of whom were young children.
Sakatare stated that fourteen of them were from Tsabu village and four from Dogon Hawa community while recounting the incident. The bodies of 15 of the 18 passengers were buried at Mai’adua today (Thursday), while the remaining six are still missing.
He also stated that a search and rescue team from the impacted villages was still on the lookout for the remaining six, despite the fact that hope of finding them alive had faded.
SP Gambo Isah, the Katsina police spokeswoman, did not answer calls or respond to a text message seeking comment on the situation.
A customs patrol vehicle following suspected smugglers in Katsina’s Jibia local government region crushed one individual to death on Wednesday.
Three more people were hurt in the event.
The dead was reportedly on his way to Katsina from Jibia on a motorcycle when he was smashed by a fleeing vehicle traveling at a high rate.
Comptroller Dalha Wada Chedi, the Controller of the Nigerian Customs Katsina Area Command, verified the occurrence and said an inquiry was underway.
According to The Punch, the passengers were mostly locals returning to their respective areas after celebrating Eid-el-Fitri.
As of Thursday morning, six bodies were still looked for according to a source .
Meanwhile, the state police command’s spokesman, Gambo Isah, has failed to react to questions regarding the incident.
