COVID-19 Scare: Borno law makers urge caution ahead of Buhari’s visit

Ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Borno State later in the week, some members of the Borno State House of Assembly have urged strict adherence to the NCDC’s Covid-19 safety protocols.

The law makers argued that it is incumbent on the good people of Borno State to ensure the safety of the President and his entourage while in the state and as such every effort must be put in place to ensure strict compliance with the Covid-19 protocol by every resident, no matter how highly placed.

Their admonition is coming against the backdrop of the reported plan by the erstwhile governor of the state, Senator Ali-Modu Sherif to return to Maiduguri from Chad to attend President Buhari’s visit.

The President is billed to visit the state on June 17 to commission some
of the 556 projects executed by Borno Governor, Babagana Zulum.

Some
of the projects  that will be commissioned by President Buhari
included  74 primary healthcare centres, new doctors quarters as well as
6,000 resettlement houses for IDPs and refugees in 15 towns.

The
President was expected to also commission some capital project out of
the 194 education Mega- size Government Technical and Primary schools in
different communities in the state a While others included  10,000
resettlement houses approved by the federal government, with four
thousand already completed among others.

The lawmakers who spoke
in separate interviews, urged the former governor and any other person
for that matter who may have travelled out to countries where Covid-19
scare is evident, to show a sense of responsibility by complying with
Covd-19 protocol.

There has been reported cases of new variant
of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) said
to be more deadly, faster and efficient in transmission, and which is
currently ravaging some parts of Africa.

‘In Chad, from January
2020 to 15 June 2021, there have been 4,943 confirmed cases of COVID-19
with 174 deaths, reported to World Health Organisation (WHO).

They
argued that it was worrisome for Sherif to even contemplate attending
the presidential visit instead of proceeding on 7-days self-isolation,
during which time he was expected to avoid physical interaction with
other members of the public.

One of the law makers disclosed
that Ali Modu Sherrif was not the only Prominent Leader that would miss
the visitation of President Buhari, noting that Sen. Kashim Shettima had
returned to the Country from the United Kingdom but on arrival,
presented himself at the sample collection centre for the repeat PCR
test and proceeded for quarantine.
