Dozens killed, Raped and Injured in violence at a county in South Sudan

It was reported Monday that dozens of people have been killed in recent violence in a volatile area of South Sudan, including beheadings and sexual assaults in that area.
Between February 17 and April 7, the mission verified 72 civilian deaths in Unity State’s Leer county, according to the mission. According to the report, one of the victims was a local member of the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders.
In the same time period, Leer recorded 64 occurrences of sexual violence, including gang rapes. “Armed youth” from the adjacent counties of Koch and Mayendit carried out the attacks.
Nicholas Haysom, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for South Sudan, said he was sorry that this happened and that he would do everything he could to make sure that victims and survivors got the justice and help they needed.
Markets, homes, humanitarian centers, and warehouses were plundered and set ablaze. About 40,000 people have fled the violence in Leer, and many are said to have crossed the Nile River in search of safety in another state.
More UN troops have been sent to Leer town to do regular patrols, says the UN mission in charge of the country.
Since South Sudan broke away from Sudan in 2011, it has been plagued by the war on a regular basis.
Some of the violence is communal, with groups of different ethnicities fighting each other in other parts of the country. Recently, the deputy president accused the president of breaking a fragile truce.
South Sudan gained independence in 2011 after years of fighting with Sudan. Two years later, a civil war broke out that killed a lot of people.
Although ties between the two sides remain difficult, the civil war ended in 2018 with a peace accord that brought President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar together in a government of national unity.
