Gunmen kidnap Catholic Priest in Jos

Rev James Kantoma, a Catholic priest from St Anthony’s Parish in Angware, Jos East Local Government Area of Plateau State, has been kidnapped by gunmen.
He was reportedly kidnapped by gunmen on Monday morning at his home in the village. In the council area, Kantoma is the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Our correspondent also learned that after being warned, some local youngsters attempted but failed to stop the attackers.
They allegedly chased the kidnappers into the forest, but the gunmen opened fire, forcing them to flee.
Polycarp Lubo, the state chairman of CAN, confirmed the occurrence and said the cleric’s kidnapping was regrettable, noting that nothing had been heard from him or his kidnappers since the gunmen seized him.
He stated that both the community and the Christian body are praying diligently for his safe return.
When reached, Alabo Alfred, the Plateau State Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said the police were searching the jungle to ensure the Catholic Priest is released.
Military operatives fight bandits in a shootout
In other developments, armed military operatives have engaged several known bandits in a gunfight near the Sokoto-Zamfara motorway.
The battlefield was said to be near to the location where over 50 members of the GSM Communication Union were kidnapped last Saturday.
It was also learned that some of the bandits were apprehended by the troops, while others fled to the neighboring woodlands with suspected gunshot wounds.
Remember that gunmen abducted about 50 members of the GSM Communication Union in Zamfara on Saturday evening as they were returning from a wedding celebration of one of their colleagues in Sokoto.
The Union’s leaders told reporters at the Gusau press center that the truck transporting their members experienced a malfunction, and they parked to fix it before the robbers swooped in and marched them into the forest.
Heavily armed security officers were stationed at the Bakura crossroads, also known as Lambar Bakura, battle-ready.
