Hama Bachama Charges NGOs to Remain Focused: Volunteers for Sustainable Development (VSD) Enhances Numan Water Distribution
In a recent meeting at his Palace in Numan, Adamawa State, His Royal Majesty Homun Daniel Shaga Ismaila PhD, OON, CON [Kpawo Nomwe, Gilongo Diya], the Hama Bachama, the paramount ruler of Bachama Chiefdom, urged non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to maintain dedication and focus in their pursuit of organizational objectives.
The monarch’s charge came during a courtesy visit by Volunteers for Sustainable Development (VSD), a grassroots-based NGO, on Thursday, 18th May 2023.
VSD’s visit marked the completion of their “Numan Water Distribution Enhancement Project,” which received funding from the Department of State, United States Embassy, Abuja, through the 2022 Ambassador Special Self-Help (ASSH) Grant Program.
The project, which commenced on 8th December 2022, aimed to provide improved access to potable water for at least 5,000 residents of Numan town, focusing on four wards: Tudun Wada Close (Ward 1), DTV Road (Ward 2), Myaweigi/John Holt/Ngbayofe Street (Ward 3), and Madwate Street/Sabon Pegi (Ward 4).
To maximize efficiency and impact, the project was divided into three phases.
The primary objectives were to reduce water wastage by 80%, restore water supply to areas disconnected from the Water Board Supply system, and conduct maintenance work in the selected wards.
The initiative aimed to address the challenges faced by Numan town’s water distribution system, including deteriorating facilities due to age.
During the visit, Chief Pwavidon Jaule (Nzomoto Hama Bachama), a Patron of VSD, presented an overview of the NGO’s background.
VSD, founded over 20 years ago, serves as a vital platform for driving grassroots development in the areas it operates.
Chief Jaule emphasized the importance of engaging political officeholders and the government to support the rehabilitation of Numan town’s water distribution system and upgrade its aging infrastructure.
The visit provided an opportunity for the members of the Numan Water Enhancement Project team to meet with the monarch.
The team consisted of representatives from the Adamawa State Water Board (Numan Office), the Work Department of Numan Local Government Council, the Bachama Traditional Council, and Volunteers for Sustainable Development.
Norbert Olisakwe, the Project Manager of VSD, introduced the team to His Royal Majesty and expressed gratitude to the US Embassy Abuja’s “Grant Award” team, led by Adela Renna, for enabling VSD to implement a project that directly benefits the residents of Numan town.
He also acknowledged the support of Hon. Pharmacist Christopher Sofore, the Executive Chairman of Numan Local Government Council, who has been instrumental in the project’s success from inception to completion.
Volunteers for Sustainable Development (VSD) is a grassroots development-based non-profit, non-political, and non-faith-based NGO located in Numan.
Established in 2003 with a mission to foster hope among the hopeless, VSD receives guidance and support from the current Paramount Ruler of Bachama Chiefdom, HRM Homun Dr. Daniel Shaga Ismaila OON, CON [Kpawo Nomwe, Gilongo Diya], Hama Bachama.
The organization’s Board of Trustees comprises altruistic individuals who serve as patrons, while its project teams consist of dedicated and skilled volunteers from various professions.
Hama Bachama’s call for NGOs to maintain focus and dedication resonates strongly with Volunteers for Sustainable Development (VSD), whose recently concluded Numan Water Distribution Enhancement Project has brought improved water access to thousands of residents.
Through collaboration with government bodies and the support of the US Embassy Abuja, VSD has successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of grassroots-driven initiatives in addressing pressing community needs.
The unwavering commitment of VSD and the endorsement of Hama Bachama are crucial elements in realizing sustainable development and fostering hope for the people of Numan town.
