Housemanship Accreditation: MDCN Says FMC Yola Is Entitled To 72 Slots, Recommends 38

• Commend the hospital for hospitality, facility, and human capacity developments, cleanliness,
• Says FMC should share her experiences with other hospitals, on monthly ward assessment award, Hospital Paupers Fund, industrial harmony in a laboratory, other departments 

The Housemanship Accreditation team of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) was in Federal Medical Centre, FMC Yola, Adamawa state, Northeast Nigeria, after having visited FMC Jalingo, Taraba state, for the Housemanship Accreditation.

MDCN is one of the foremost medical regulatory authorities in Africa.

Housemanship is a compulsory one-year program medical professionals undergo,  after graduating from medical school, under the supervision of qualified licensed doctors. 

The team of eight members led by the Registrar of the  Council, Dr. Tajudeen Adisa Bolanle Sanusi commended the Medical Director, FMC Yola, for hospitality despite the short notice, he would have to rush back to Yola from Abuja.

The team has also commended the hospital management for the non-interference in the accreditation exercise. 

The committee was highly impressed with the tidiness of the hospital, the introduction of the monthly ward assessment award, cordiality, cooperation, and teamwork between and among health professionals, where she recommended that FMC Yola should share knowledge with other healthcare delivery institutions on how industrial harmony in the laboratory and other departments has been able to be effectively achieved. 

The establishment of and the transparent and accountability in the activities of the Hospital Paupers Fund in footing the hospital bills of indigent inpatients as one of the corporate social responsibilities was also graded as excellent and that the idea should be shared, with the view for other hospitals to introduce same.

Having been satisfied with the efficiency, effectiveness, and capacity of the health facility, MDCN remarked that FMC Yola is entitled to 72 housemanship slots, it has, however, in the interim, recommended 38 slots.

Speaking, the Medical Director, Prof Auwal Muhammad Abubakar thanked the MDCN for considering FMC Yola for the Housemanship Accreditation exercise.

Prof Auwal, while expressing his appreciation for the 38 slots recommended, commended the accreditation team for what he considered as a thorough and fair exercise.

Prof Auwal said the management of the hospital has noted the observations made to improve the quality of healthcare services in the Centre.

Responding to the media crew, ahead of department observed that the 32 housemanship slots being recommended, was a big plus to the hospital that used to have not more than 12 slots.

Other members of the accreditation team are, MDCN Deputy Registrar Dr. N. U. Nwakanma, Prof Hadiza A. Usman, Prof E.T, Dr. Ngabea Murtala A., Dr. Daniel Tyovenda, Dr. Zainab Yunusa-Kaltingo, and Dr. Ahmed H.K. 

Most of the clinical departments in FMC Yola have since started postgraduate (Residency) training, following the accreditations by the regulatory bodies. 

FMC Yola, noted as one with the highest number of successful siamese twins separation in Nigeria and perhaps in West Africa, for which the Adamawa state Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri urged the Federal Government to set up a Conjoined twins Centre in the health facility, is set for accreditation of her Paediatric Department, coming up soon.

The Senate has also passed a bill sponsored by Sen Aisha Dahiru Ahmed, popularly known as Binani, representing Adamawa Central in the 9th national Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for the upgrading of FMC Yola to a Teaching Hospital, with Medical College at Modibbo Adama University, MAU Yola, which establishment has already gained the presidential assent.
