IGP Bans Use Of Spy Number Plates Nationwide

…Directs Seizure of SPY Plates and Reversal of Original Registered Number Plates
ABUJA – Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, issued an absolute prohibition on the use of Police SPY vehicle number plates by car owners in all of the federation’s states on Wednesday.
No matter if it has authorisation or not, all authorizations are hereby permanently cancelled.
The Force Spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement reported by the independent that the IGP’s directive is required to “forestall the ongoing violation for traffic norms and regulations and other existent laws directing road use by those sheltering under the benefits of Police SPY number plates.”
Therefore, the IGP has ordered that police personnel and officers from other security agencies who are assigned to VIPs who drive vehicles with SPY license plates should ensure swift adherence to this direction or risk being arrested for violating it.
The Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), who is in charge of the Commissioners of Police (CPs) in the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, have been instructed by the IGP to ensure that the aforementioned directions are fully implemented.
The IGP expressly ordered the AIGs and CPs to see to it that all SPY license plates already in use be confiscated going forward; however, the owners of such cars should not be detained unless they are police officers or employees of other security services performing escort responsibilities.
The IGP did issue a warning, however, that when carrying out these tasks, officials must make sure that people’s rights and privileges are maintained in accordance with local laws and best practices around the world. In order to reinforce our internal security, other security agencies and the general public are urged to work with the Police in this respect.
