In the midst of the Ukraine conflict, China is eyeing Russian territory

China and Russia: While the crisis in Ukraine captivates the world’s attention, rumors claim that China is conducting military drills along its far north-eastern frontier, prompting fears that Beijing is preparing a push into Russian territory.
In February and March of this year, Anthony Klan, writing in the Australian investigative newspaper The Klaxon, claimed to have obtained images and details of China’s air force and army conducting secretive exercises along the Russian border areas along the Ussuri River, near Russia’s sparsely populated Khabarovsk and Ussuriysk regions.
According to The Print, China’s 78th Group Army is conducting tank and armored vehicle tactical maneuvers, as well as Chinese Air Force fighter jets and bombers, including live-fire exercises, out of its north-eastern Harbin Air Base.
Given that China’s only border in the region is with Russia, the military activities are uncommon, especially given that China publically backed Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine on February 24, according to Klan.
“Beijing secretly began its airforce and armoured unit drills from February, near Russian borders, in the name of routine exercises,” according to a senior intelligence source quoted by The Print.
According to The Klaxon, intelligence sources stated China’s military activity near the Ussuri River went unnoticed since the world’s attention was focused on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s movements in the Taiwan Strait.
Although China has publicly declared support for Russia, experts point out that Beijing has territorial conflicts with nearly all of its neighbors, making an attack on Russia a distinct possibility.
One security expert stated, “China appears to be way too prepared for the ongoing war situation.”
“The far eastern territory of Russia including the areas of Khabarovsk and Ussuriysk are already remote and Russians have hardly enough military presence to secure these areas, especially if China attempts to venture out.”
Relations between China and Russia
Sino-Russian ties refers to the international relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation, often known as China and Russia relations. Following the breakup of the Soviet Union and the formation of the Russian Federation in 1991, diplomatic relations between China and Russia improved.
With a history of hostility in the region, China stunned Moscow in March 1969 when it ambushed the remote Damansky Island in a violent attack that killed at least 31 Soviet border guards, pushing the two nations to the verge of war.
The tiny island, known in Russian as Damansky and in Chinese as Zhenbao Dao, is located in the midst of the Ussuri River, which forms the China-Russia border in the Far East.
Many Russians are still angry about the tragic incident. As Klan explained, any move by China into Russian territory will send shockwaves around the world.
