Indian police shoot dead two Muslims protesting against Blasphemy

Authorities informed AFP Saturday that two protesters [ Muslims ] were killed and more than 130 others were jailed after street rallies provoked by a ruling party official’s remarks against Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).
Since last week, when a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party made disrespectful remarks against the Holy Prophet (PBUH) on a TV discussion show, the Islamic world has been in uproar.
After Friday prayers, Muslims throughout India and neighboring nations flocked to the streets in large numbers to oppose the remarks, with police firing on a mob in Ranchi, in the eastern state of Jharkhand.
“Police were forced to open fire to disperse protesters […] resulting in the death of two,” an officer from Ranchi, in eastern India, told AFP.
Officers said that when police sought to disperse the gathering with a baton charge, the crowd ignored their orders not to march from a mosque to a market and threw broken bottles and stones.
Authorities in the city stopped internet access and imposed a curfew, according to local resident Shabnam Ara, who told AFP that the situation remained tight on Saturday.
She went on to say,
“We are praying for peace and harmony.”
After many demonstrations across the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, police used tear gas to disperse at least one rally.
Most protests concluded peacefully, although Avanish Awasthi, a senior government secretary in the state, stated that demonstrators in other cities “hurl stones at police and wound at least one officer.
“We will take strict action against those indulging in stone pelting and violence,” Awasthi told reporters.
“Those working behind the scene, instigating violence, will not be spared at all.”
According to AFP, up to “136 protesting miscreants” [ Muslims ] have been arrested in six districts throughout Uttar Pradesh, according to Prashant Kumar, a top police officer in the state.
On Friday, large rallies took place across India, with some mobs burning effigies of Nupur Sharma, the BJP spokeswoman whose words sparked the uproar.
A diplomatic tempest is brewing
Sharma’s comments have engulfed India in a diplomatic tempest, with over 20 countries summoning their Indian ambassadors for an explanation.
The BJP has taken steps to mitigate the damage, suspending the official from the party and issued a statement in which it claims to appreciate all religions.
After midday prayers on Friday, the largest public [ Muslims ] rallies in response to the uproar occurred, with authorities estimating that more than 100,000 people were mobilized across Bangladesh.
Another 5,000 protesters marched to the streets in Lahore on the orders of a religious group, demanding that the government take greater action against India in response to the remarks.
