INEC Holds Emergency Meeting Over Adamawa Supplementary Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been conducting a supplementary election in Adamawa State, Nigeria. However, the declaration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Aisha Dahiru, as the winner of the election by the Resident Electoral Commission (REC), Prof. Yunusa Hudu Ari, has caused outrage among Nigerians.

In response, INEC has suspended the collation of results and summoned the REC and all those involved to its headquarters in Abuja for an emergency meeting. The commission stated that the action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the returning officer and is null, void, and of no effect.

“The attention of the commission has been drawn to a purported declaration of a winner in the Adamawa governorship election by the REC, even when the process has clearly not been concluded.
“The action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the returning officer. It is null, void, and of no effect. Consequently, the collation of results of the supplementary election is hereby suspended,” the statement reads.

INEC to Conclude Collation of Results in Abuja

According to a top official of the Independent National Electoral Commission who spoke to Daily Trust, the commission will conclude the collation of the Adamawa supplementary governorship election in Abuja. While the results collation may be concluded in Abuja, the final declaration will be done in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

We are yet to come to terms with the motivation behind his action. In the first place, he (REC) has no power to announce results. Such powers are vested in the INEC chairman who can assign whoever he deems fit.
“We are going to hold an emergency meeting tomorrow (Monday) during which a decision will be taken on the governorship election,” he said.

INEC Appalled by the Unilateral Recklessness of the Adamawa REC

Another national commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission expressed his disappointment in the reckless actions of the Adamawa REC. The REC has no power to announce results, and such powers are vested in the INEC chairman, who can assign whoever he deems fit.

The commission will hold an emergency meeting, during which a decision will be taken on the governorship election. The national commissioner also expressed his disapproval of the treatment meted out to their colleague in Yola, saying that it was despicable that a national commissioner would be stripped naked. There are a lot of questions begging for answers, especially about the security operatives.
