“Interceptor,” Matthew Reilly’s first film, is now available on Netflix and looks like it should have a Cannon logo on it. It’s such a throwback action movie that it almost feels like an abandoned Chuck Norris script with some modern gender politics and social themes thrown in (though someone like Cynthia Rothrock could have easily fronted a film like this in the 1980s). Reilly has made a film that the characters from “The Expendables” might lounge around watching with co-writer Stuart Beattie (“Collateral”), and there’s something laudable about the no-nonsense hoo-rah of it all. The combat choreography is bland, especially in the climax, and some of the execution is clumsy, but this is the kind of summer escapism that people desire when the weather warms up across the United States. You can now watch it on Netflix as well.
According to the account, Reilly wanted his debut production to have a low budget, a small cast, and only one set. So when he leaves JJ Collins (Elsa Pataky) on a ship in the middle of the Atlantic, a ship that contains interceptor missiles, the international safety net designed to take care of business if a nuclear weapon is fired, we know it won’t be long until chaos ensues. Collins was driven out of the service after she blew the whistle on a superior who sexually harassed her, and this is something of a homecoming for her. She’s a no-nonsense soldier, the kind of person we want on our side when the chips are down.
Of course, the fan is blown on the day she arrives when terrorists steal 16 nuclear bombs from a Russian plant and aim them at major US cities. While she and a superior are discussing how this could have happened, she realizes that the bad guys have also examined the role of the interceptor and are already inside the ship. The terrorists, led by an unpleasant alpha male named Kessel (Luke Bracey), appear to have nothing on their minds other than the extermination of humanity. Can JJ stop them from getting into the control room, where they could turn off the interceptors and kill everyone in the United States?

Yes, she is capable. Because “Interceptor” isn’t set out to be a thriller with a lot of twists and turns, it becomes a test of execution. The majority of this is on Pataky and Bracey’s shoulders, who quarrel in between the gunfire and combat scenes that erupt whenever Kessel attempts to breach the control room. Pataky seems a little too stoic in the beginning, but she’s up for the action in the second half of the film and is credible as the hero. Even if he could have been a touch more charismatic, Bracey dives into his character’s vapid smarm. When there’s a version of “Interceptor” that leans even more heavily into its B-movie ’80s heritage, dropping one-liners and great murders, both actors appear to be under-directed. The picture, as silly as it is and full of story holes as it is, nearly takes itself too seriously (although a cameo from Pataky’s husband and executive producer Chris Hemsworth is entertaining).
It would also have been wonderful to lean into style a little more with the action, which is mostly shot in a way that does the job but not much more. At the end of the day, that’s a fair assessment of “Interceptor.” It’s all right. It completes the task. Given the number of bad action films that have made their way onto VOD and streaming sites in recent years, just getting the job done feels like a minor miracle. Chuck Norris, on the other hand, would have had more fun with it.
