Jennifer Hudson wins Tony Award, reaches EGOT status

“You’re going to love me,” Jennifer Hudson once sang. She was absolutely correct.
On Sunday, the actress and singer won her first Tony Award as a co-producer for “A Strange Loop,” which won best musical. With that, she cemented her place as the EGOT’s newest member.
A person who has won each of the four major American entertainment awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, is known as an EGOT.
Hudson’s EGOT quest began in 2007 when she won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her role as the vivacious Effie White in “Dreamgirls.” Her self-titled debut in 2009 earned her a Grammy for best R&B album, which she followed up eight years later with a win for “The Color Purple,” the best musical theater album. She won a Daytime Emmy for best interactive media as an executive producer for “Baba Yaga,” a virtual-reality animated feature, just last year.
Hudson joins a group of 16 other famous people who have also achieved EGOT status. Composer Richard Rogers was the first to do so in 1962, and stars like actress Rita Moreno and singer John Legend are also in this group.
She is only the second black woman to be inducted into the EGOT aristocracy, following Whoopi Goldberg, who was inducted in 2002. Hudson, 40, is the third-youngest EGOT winner and the first who was a finalist on “American Idol.”
Hudson’s unusual, soulful vocals have supported her career despite her failure to win Season 3 of the singing competition show. She’s won a slew of honors in the past for her outstanding performances.
In addition to her Academy Award, Jennifer Hudson won a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild award, and a BAFTA (Britain’s equivalent of the Oscars) for her acting debut in “Dreamgirls.” She’s also won a slew of NAACP Image Awards, including two for her depiction of Aretha Franklin in the film musical “Respect,” a role she was hand-picked for by Franklin herself.
