Menstrual banks to be established by UNICEF in Nigerian schools

The establishment would start in November throughout all the schools with Girls Enrollment Project 3, according to Mrs Mairama Dikwa, a UNICEF education specialist, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Saturday (GEP3).

She explained that the programme will be carried out under the agency’s Girl Education Project’s Menstrual Hygiene Management, which was established to support girls and make sure they stay in school.

Dikwa believed the gesture was perfect for promoting and enhancing girls’ school enrollment and guaranteeing that the girls didn’t disrupt the learning cycle.

The UNICEF education specialist continued by saying that most of the time when girls menstruate, they missed school because they had the necessary skills to take care of themselves and in some cases because their parents couldn’t buy sanitary napkins.

She continued by saying that UNICEF was looking at ways to promote the girls‘ use of reusable pads and engage their moms in making the pads, allowing them to each have a part in ensuring their children’s menstrual hygiene and academic success.

Dikwa said that the menstrual banks’ programme, at its pilot stage, will begin in 50 Junior Secondary Schools in each of the six states where the UNICEF GEP 3 project was implemented: Sokoto, Zamfara, Niger, Kano, Bauchi, and Katsina.
