It’s probably the Pandemic, but director Joe Carnahan and actor-producer Frank Grillo appear to be on a roll—this is the second picture the two have released since March. That previous film was ‘Boss Level,’ a fun riff in the ‘Edge of Tomorrow’/’Ready Player One’/’Groundhog Day’ vein that gave Carnahan a great excuse to blow stuff up over and over and over again.

‘Copshop,’ from a script by Carnahan and Kurt McLeod (the latter co-wrote the narrative with Mark Williams), is apparently more realistic than ‘Boss Level,’ but its structure isn’t wholly foreign. Teddy Muretto, a seemingly criminal that many people want dead, is played by Grillo. Immediately. As a result, he concludes that jail is the safest place for him.

He strides into a drunken and rowdy brawl at a casino wedding and strikes police officer Valerie Young (Alexis Louder). This solves the problem. Valerie, who recently purchased a near-antique handgun, wishes her job was more Wild West than it is. As it happens, her region of Nevada is so sleepy that she and her sergeant had plenty of time to unwind by a remote burger truck before the D&D arrived. By the end of the film, she will not feel as if she should have been more cautious about what she wished for. Rather, let us declare A NEW ACTION HERO IS BORN.

After Teddy is imprisoned (and has a clear view of the precinct’s military-grade armory), some State Troopers load Valerie’s station house with a stinky sot. As it happens, this party’s representative, Bob Viddick, has staged his stinking condition in order to get close to Teddy. Viddick is indeed solemn as a judge, ready to pass judgment on Grillo’s character.

Viddick is played by Gerard Butler, and if the concept of a cage bout between Grillo and Butler is primarily set in different cages until it doesn’t seem like Guy Movie Heaven to you, then ascend at your leisure. While other threatening narrative elements percolate, like a corrupt cop attempting to smuggle drugs out of the precinct house, the fellas trash-talks each other.

The suspense is exciting and portrayed in a low-key manner. Indeed, for the first 50 minutes, this may appear to be a rather restrained Joe Carnahan film. But don’t worry, pilgrims. When a gregarious psycho murderer, played by Toby Huss, enters the precinct home armed with party balloons and a machine gun, various forms of ‘all hell’ break free.

The shoot-’em-ups are continuous ‘whoa!’-inducing, and while none of the story twists are truly unforeseen, they are not without curiosity. Having an African-American female heroine battle toe-to-toe with two white male action movie legends is a praiseworthy notion, but one that Carnahan might have blown spectacularly. He, however, does not. Bring it on, the sequel.

The film is now in cinemas.

Copshop is an awesome thrill trip that is entertaining, witty, and tense for a few satisfyingly flighty minutes, despite the fact that it takes a long time to get going. Honest Grillo, Gerard Butler, Toby Huss, and Alexis Louder all put up terrific performances, while Ryan O’Nan is outstanding. Joe Carnahan’s bearing is fantastic; it’s extremely shot and pretty up-to-date, with a lot of vitality. Clinton Shorter’s music is fantastic.
