At the age of 18, the bedroom pop singer mom toon became famous for her song “Prom Dress.” It was a sad but upbeat song about not getting what you want and being disappointed in high school.

The song’s catchy ukulele progressions and catchy melodies were a big part of its success, and on her sophomore album, Rising, she fully develops all of the qualities that appeared in her earlier self-produced work.

Rising is clearly about the next stages of young adulthood. This is different from mxmtoon’s earlier work, like “Prom Dress” and other songs that seemed to be at least partially based on the artist’s own experiences as a teenager.

Growing older and life lessons are prevalent themes in many songs, but they stand out, especially in “growing pains” and the acoustic-guitar pop of “victim of nostalgia.”

In these songs, Mxmtoon longs for her younger self and worries about the future at the same time. However, on the catchy synth-pop blast “coming of age,” she embraces change and lets go of the past.

Rising by mxmtoon has better lyrics and production than anything that has come before; it slows down and becomes more contemplative, especially during songs like “Florida,” which marks the album’s halfway point.

Sometimes they are too sweet for their good, even when rising indicates growth. When compared to some of the more vulnerable psychological inquiries heard later on the album, the cloying album opener “Mona Lisa” comes out as patronizing and banal. It would sound perfectly at home on the soundtrack of an early 2000s romantic comedy.

Other than the genuine emotions they are supposed to be exploring, other productions, songwriting, and arrangement decisions have a false ring to them.

The songs on rising are a strong representation of the complicated emotional landscape of the period between adolescence and one’s early twenties, and they will particularly relate to anyone traversing that difficult moment in 2022, despite its somewhat sugary aftertaste.
