As the number of cases of monkeypox around the world rises, public health experts and researchers are doubting whether the current outbreaks can be contained, according to NAN.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the situation is unlikely to turn into a full-fledged pandemic.
However, more than 1,000 illnesses have been documented in nearly 30 countries where outbreaks are uncommon.
To try to stem the spread of the virus, countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States have begun employing a practice known as ‘ring vaccination.’
Smallpox vaccines are believed to be effective against monkeypox since the viruses are related to people who have been exposed to monkeypox through intimate contact with an infected person.
This was documented in the country during epidemiological week 22, which ran from May 29 to June 5, 2022, according to the agency.
Between January 1 and June 5, the country confirmed 31 instances in 12 states, including the Federal Capital Territory, according to the report (FCT).
In addition, the NCDC confirmed that 110 suspected cases of the disease had been reported in the country, up from 66 suspected cases previously.
“From January 1 to 5 June, 2022, there have been 110 suspected cases in total and 31 confirmed cases from 12 states.”
Adamawa 5, Lagos 6, River 3, FCT 2, Kano 2, Delta 2, Bayelsa 2, Edo 2, Imo 2, Plateau 2, and Ondo 1 are the states.
“One death was recorded in a 40-year old man, with co-morbidity that was receiving immunosuppressive drugs. “There were 10 new positive cases in Epi week 22, 2022, from six states – Edo 2, Rivers 2, Plateau 2, Lagos 2, Ondo 1 and Imo 1,” it stated.
Monkeypox, an uncommon and little-known disease, is being examined in European countries, including the United Kingdom, as well as the United States, Canada, and Australia, according to NAN.
In recent weeks, there have been over 300 confirmed cases in the United Kingdom.
Although infections are usually mild and pose little risk to the general public, the UK government has purchased smallpox vaccine to protect against monkeypox.
Monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus, which is related to smallpox but is considerably less severe and has a minimal risk of infection, according to scientists.
It’s usually found in rural areas of central and west African countries, close to tropical rain forests.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 1,200 cases of monkeypox have been reported in those areas.
There are two primary strains of the virus: west African and Central African, and it is the milder of the two that is presently circulating in other parts of the world.
The virus is currently spreading in the communities due to an extremely high number of people sick with monkeypox outside of Africa who have no travel connections to the region.
