NYSC Calls For Deployment of More Troops to Orientation Camps Nationwide

In light of the growing security challenges, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has called for more troops to be deployed to its Orientation Camps across the country.

On Thursday in Abuja, the Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board, Amb. Fatima Abubakar, made the announcement while leading members of the board on a courtesy visit to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru.

She clarified that the need for further deployment stemmed from the
increasing size of the camps and the complexities of the current
security situation.

The board chairman also urged NYSC and the army to work together to ensure the safety of corps members during elections.

â€œWe are pleading that you beef up troops at the NYSC camps because the camps have become so large these days.

â€œIn a particular camp, sometimes we have more than 1,000 young men and women during orientation, and we donâ€™t have enough troops, especially because of the growing insecurity.

â€œConstantly, we are scared, and we hope that nothing like that will
happen around our camps, but we are pleading for a beef up of troops
around our orientation camps.

â€œWe are also asking for collaboration between army and the scheme in areas of capacity and human resource building.

â€œWe
also hope that the army can teach safety and escape drills to corps
members and staff on issues of safety and security in the unfortunate
event of an attack during and after orientation programme,â€ she said.

The Nigerian army, which is the second largest
stakeholder in the NYSC system, has continued to play its statutory role
by sending commandants to man NYSC camps, according to Abubakar.

She
thanked the army for supplying corps members with minimal training and
protection during orientation camps and national assignments such as
elections.

Abubakar also thanked the army for providing lodging for corps members in separate barracks.

In
response, Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai, praised the
scheme for its ongoing efforts to instill discipline in youths by
instilling in them the attitude of loyal service to the government.

During
orientation camps, primary assignments, and other national duties,
Attahiru assured the Corps that the Nigerian Army will continue to
provide adequate protection for all members.

To give youths a leg up, he urged the board to incorporate national patriotism and entrepreneurship into its programs.

â€œI assure you of the Nigerian
Armyâ€™s continued support for NYSC in the areas of provision of suitable
and qualified commandants, instructors and soldiers during orientation
camps as well as security to corps members in camps and in their areas
of assignments.

â€œI, therefore, encourage NYSC to
include in its programmes subjects on patriotism and entrepreneurial
skills which will go a long way in enhancing development,â€ he said.
