In a profound and heartbreaking turn of events, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) community is grappling with the untimely demise of one of its own, Peter Yunana. Hailing from Kagoro in the Kaura Local Government area of Kaduna State, Peter, with the NYSC registration number AD/23C/0365, was actively serving in GSS Numan, situated in the Numan Local Government area of Adamawa State. The sombre incident unfolded during the nail-biting football match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Bafana Bafana of the Republic of South Africa in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The State Coordinator of the NYSC in Adamawa State, Mr. Denis Jingi, confirmed this tragic incident to our Yola Correspondent. According to Mr. Jingi, the lifeless body of Peter Yunana has been solemnly deposited at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital in Yola, marking the commencement of preparations for his final rites in Kagoro.

The heart-wrenching episode took place during the intense penalty shootout phase of the Nigeria vs. South Africa match. Reportedly, Peter, in a poignant moment, informed his fellow corps members that he could not bear to watch the crucial kicks. Subsequently, he bowed his head and, to the shock of those around him, collapsed.

Mr. Jingi recounted,

“He was rushed to the Numan General Hospital by his colleagues and was confirmed dead. The corpse is now peacefully resting in the hospital’s mortuary. In respect and honour, we will transport the departed to FMC Yola this morning for proper preservation, pending the funeral arrangements to be carried out by his grieving parents in Kaduna State.”
