Sam Altman Joins Microsoft
Following a stressful weekend in boardrooms, there were rumours that Altman might return. However, Microsoft declared Sam Altman joins Microsoft in his place, and Emmett Shear, a co-founder and former CEO of Twitch, confirmed he would be taking over as CEO of OpenAI.
Satya Nadella, the chairman and CEO of Microsoft, made the announcement on X shortly before 3 a.m. ET, more than 48 hours after OpenAI’s board of directors said they “no longer had confidence” in Altman a key figure in the tech industry’s dedication to deal with the potential and possible risks of AI.
Microsoft has spent billions in OpenAI, one of the world’s hottest startups, since its initial financing round in 2019. Since then, OpenAI has emerged as the most visible of a new generation of AI businesses, with its ChatGPT, a huge language model chatbot, becoming a symbol of everyday AI advancement.
Nadella stated that Microsoft is dedicated to assisting OpenAI, which now has a new leadership team, as well as confirming that Altman will lead a ” fresh advanced AI research team” alongside OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, who was removed as its president on Friday.
We are looking forward to proceeding quickly to present them with the resources needed for their success,” Nadella said in a statement. Altman reshared the post with the caption, “Our goal continues.
After a study, OpenAI claimed he was “not regularly fair in his communications with the board, hampered its ability to exercise its responsibilities as Sam Altman joins Microsoft.
In a post on X on Friday, Brockman said he and Altman were “shocked and saddened” by the board’s decision, but that “more significant things are coming soon.”
On Sunday, it was reported that some OpenAI shareholders were lobbying for Altman’s reinstatement, following the appointment of chief technology officer Mira Murati as interim CEO.
Shear, on the other hand, revealed on X early Monday that he would instead lead OpenAI. He outlined his strategy for the first 30 days, which included hiring an independent investigator “to dig into the entire process leading up to this point and generate a full report.”
Stability and success are the cornerstones of OpenAI, and I am committed to ensuring that they remain intact. I have the utmost respect for what Sam Altman and the entire OpenAI team have accomplished, and I will do everything in my power to maintain the integrity of the organization, as Sam Altman joins microsoft.
Despite any recent turmoil, I am confident that OpenAI will continue to be a leader in the field of AI as Sam Altman joins Microsoft. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such an innovative and dynamic organization.”
