Eto’o is the third former Indomitable Lion to compete for the presidency of Cameroon’s football organization thus far.
The incumbent Seidou Mbombo Njoya’s tenure as football leader in the country scheduled to host the Africa Cup of Nations in January was revoked by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, leaving the position empty.
Despite this, he stayed in office while fresh elections were being organized.
On Tuesday evening, the former Barcelona and Inter Milan player announced his choice on social media, stating that he took the decision ‘out of love for Cameroon and passion for our football.â€
“Time is running out. Waiting is not an option. It is time to rebuild our football†Eto’o stated.
The postponed Fecafoot elections are slated to take place on December 11th, just in time for the Africa Cup of Nations to begin on January 9th in Cameroon.
With 56 goals in 118 appearances, the four-time African player of the year also had brief stints in the English Premier League with Chelsea and Everton before finishing his playing career in Qatar.
At the international level, he was a gold medalist at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and helped Cameroon win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000 and 2002.

Jules Denis Onana and Emmanuel Maboang Kessack, both of whom represented Cameroon in the 1990 World Cup, are also there, as is temporary president Seidou Mbombo Njoya, as well as football agent Ivo Chi.
Candidates have till October 11th to declare their candidacy.
