Senate Passes Bill to Establish Federal Medical Centers

The Senate has enacted a bill that would establish a legal framework for the country’s Federal Medical Centres, as well as equip and maintain them to provide facilities for medical diagnosis, rehabilitation, and treatment.

The National Dermatology Hospital, Garkida, Adamawa State, was approved by the upper chamber at the same time.

Following the Committee on Health’s assessment of two distinct reports, both proposals were passed (Secondary and Tertiary).

Senator Yahaya Oloriegbe (APC, Kwara Central), the Committee’s Chairman, stated in his presentation that the Federal Medical Centres (Establishment) Bill, 2021, aims to

rendering intensive, effective, and efficient healthcare services to the generality of Nigerians” among other things.

He went on to say that, in addition to offering diagnostic and treatment equipment and facilities, the Federal Medical Centres will also act as advanced healthcare training schools and institutions.

“It will provide laboratories, research, and experimental stations
necessary for efficient national health service delivery”, the lawmaker
said.

With the passage of the bill creating the National Dermatological Hospital, Garkida, Oloriegbe highlighted that the hospital would provide diagnosis, cure, rehabilitation, cosmetic, and treatment of all skin, hair, and other disorders needing dermatological care.
