Stay Out Of The Jerusalem Crisis, Israel Tells Biden White House

The US voiced ‘concerns’ about the situation and expected evictions in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood as violence against Palestinians escalated in East Jerusalem. The Israelis, according to numerous media sources, were uninterested in hearing these issues and ordered the US not to intervene in the crisis.

In a Sunday phone call, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and his Israeli counterpart, Meir Ben-Shabbat, shared their ‘concerns.’ Ben-Shabbat reportedly told Sullivan that the US and other countries should stay out of the conflict, according to Hebrew media sources. International pressure on Israel to avoid the evictions or the violence will be ‘a prize for the rioters and those sending them who hoped to put pressure on Israel‘ he said.

Despite the provocations, Ben-Shabbat said Israel was treating the situation ‘out of a position of sovereignty, responsibly, and with common sense despite the provocations’.

In Sheikh Jarrah, about 40 Palestinians face eviction. Israeli security forces and Jewish settlers also attacked Palestinian demonstrators. In addition, Israeli police raided the al-Aqsa mosque, firing rubber bullets and tear gas, injuring 215 people, including 153 hospitalized.

Rockets were fired and explosive balloons were sent from Gaza amid the Israeli conflict, but they did little harm as normal.

Though Sullivan only expressed concern about Israeli aggression, he agreed with Ben-Shabbat that the firing of rockets and incendiary balloons from Gaza into Israel is intolerable and must be condemned.

Israel launched airstrikes on Gaza on Monday, killing at least 27 people, including nine children. The Israeli military has sent reinforcements to the Gaza border, escalating the crisis.
