Empowering Women Journalists in 2023: OISD Takes the Lead in Adamawa

Empowering Women Journalists
In a groundbreaking move to bolster the role of women in media, the Organization for Innovation and Sustainable Development (OISD) kicked off a three-day training program themed “SHE EXIST: PROMOTING EQUITY AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR WOMEN IN MEDIA.”
This transformative initiative was formally inaugurated on September 13, 2023, by OISD’s Executive Director, Mr. Jamilu Yusuf, at the esteemed Abti American University AUN, Yola.
With sponsorship from the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, and in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) National Secretariat, this event aimed to equip female journalists in Northeastern Nigeria with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their profession.
Facilitators from the media industry spared no effort in ensuring that the training delivered top-notch content on various pertinent topics.
Keynote addresses from distinguished personalities underscored the importance of this endeavour. Robert Gabor, the U.S. Embassy Media Attaché, and Aisha Gambari, Senior Information Specialist, both highlighted the critical need to empower women in journalism.
Gambari, in particular, shed light on the challenges faced by female journalists and emphasized their indispensable role in the media landscape.
Mr. Lephie Jonah, a facilitator, set the tone with the theme “She Exists: Promoting Equity and Equal Opportunities for Women in Media.”
He articulated that this project stands as a bold and transformative initiative targeting gender disparities within the media industry, with a special focus on the Northeast region of Nigeria.
This comprehensive program is meticulously designed to not only empower women journalists to exist within the media landscape but also to thrive as influential change-makers, storytellers, and opinion shapers.
Mrs. Neido Geoffrey Kufulto, the Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry of Information and Strategy, underscored that journalism is a profession open to both men and women.

She urged women to showcase their invaluable abilities as nurturers and leaders in fields like journalism.
Kufulto encouraged women in journalism not to waver in their duties, assuring them that they are more than capable of matching, if not surpassing, their male counterparts.
Mrs Neido extended her gratitude to the American Government, OISD, the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, and the President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Ladi Bala, for their invaluable contributions and knowledge-sharing towards advancing women in journalism.
During the official opening of the training program, Mrs. Ladi Bala, President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, lauded OISD’s steadfast commitment to empowering women in media.
She acknowledged that the program, spearheaded by OISD and backed by the Public Affairs of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, marks a significant stride towards gender equality in the profession.

Bala urged women Journalists, to remain dedicated in their primary assignments and to adhere diligently to the ethical guidelines that govern their profession for the sake of safety and credibility.
DeWayne P. Frazier, President of the American University of Nigeria, also voiced his wholehearted support for this training initiative.
He viewed it as an invaluable source of knowledge for female journalists in the state and encouraged them to put the training into practice, embodying the ethos of “She Exists: Promoting Equity and Equal Opportunities for Women in Media.”
